March Forward: International Women's Day 2025

March Forward:  Brewing a Fairer Future for Women & Girls

As we mark International Women’s Day (IWD) for yet another year in 2025, we feel it’s important to recognize and reflect on the advancements made towards gender equality.

At the same time, however, we also need to acknowledge the work that still needs to be done, and how it’s extremely important to stay motivated as we March Forward and continue to strive for systemic change for women and girls.

As stated by UN Women Australia - “We’re simply not where we should be, and it’s time to turn promises into progress”.

At The Bean Alliance, we believe that every cup of coffee tells a story. We also know that enjoyment of our favourite caffeinated beverage simply wouldn’t be possible were it not for the incredible efforts and contributions of women across the coffee industry… from the farmers and labourers who cultivate and pick the beans, to the baristas and business leaders shaping the future of coffee.

Celebrating & Supporting Women in Coffee

The stated aim of the International Women's Coffee Alliance (Australia) is:

“To empower women in the international community to achieve meaningful and sustainable lives; and to encourage and recognise the participation of women in all aspects of the coffee industry.”

The Bean Alliance Group is proud to be an official corporate partner of the IWCAA, and recognizes the importance of including and elevating women in the coffee industry, so that they can make meaningful contributions and achieve sustainable livelihoods in their communities.

The IWCAA seeks to drive opportunities for engagement, advancement and inclusion of women and marginalised people across all areas of the coffee industry, something we at The Bean Alliance Group fully support and get behind.

“Bean Alliance is a proud Corporate Member of the IWCA Australian Chapter and together, we embrace the diverse community that makes up the coffee people around our globe. In partnership with IWCA, Bean Alliance acknowledges both the plight and achievements of women across all sectors that make up our colourful industry.”

“My observation is that I see many women around me who are incredibly productive, over-tasked with commitments for family and work, whilst trying to maintain health and friendships. Not just on IWD but every day, I March Forward with you… I see you, I celebrate you, and I am you.”

Meet Elizabeth Duna

“Last year, we had the privilege of hosting Elizabeth Duna, a Fairtrade coffee farmer from Papua New Guinea, at our roastery. As the first chairwoman coffee farmer in her region, Elizabeth is a trailblazer for women in coffee, leading with strength and passion.

During her visit, we took her through our roasting process, showing her how the beans she helps produce make their way from farm to cup.

One of the most special moments was when she held a pack of Global Cafe Direct, a brand committed to supporting Fairtrade farmers like her. It was a full-circle moment—recognising the hard work, dedication, and impact that Fairtrade has in ensuring a fairer future for women in coffee.

We celebrate Elizabeth and all women in coffee, not just on International Women’s Day, but every day as we continue to #MarchForward #ForWomenAndGirls globally”.

Help at Home

Bean Alliance also continues to work in partnership with ‘Fitted for Work’ as part of their ‘She Works’ mentoring program, which is designed to connect job-ready applicants to employers looking to increase their gender balance by recruiting more women into their workplace. This includes training and upskilling women so that they’re better able to gain meaningful employment within their communities and experience success in their careers.

“Our partnership with Fitted for Work allows us to exhibit allyship in a fundamental way.”

“The relationship with Therese and the team results in a warm connection between job-seekers and employment.”

“This IWD, as we “March Forward”, I challenge all leaders and community members to be an active ally as this will bring about improved outcomes for all, particularly those experiencing disadvantage.”

  • Susan Castle, Director - Marketing, Strategy & Development, The Bean Alliance Group.
